Backroads
The older I get, the more eager I become for cycling on quiet roads. That is why I like to travel with cycle guides of my friend and publisher Paul Benjaminse, who is a champ in finding nice backroads. All of his routes are available as GPS tracks. Some are published in English, in a printed version or as an e-book.
2017 I created my Balkan coast route for him, available as an e-book in Dutch for € 14,95.
My website has tons of info for cycling without the distraction of traffic. The video above shows an example of how backroads-hunting resulted in avoiding the busy road in northern Albania between Shkodër and the border of Montenegro by 75%.

Wrapping it up: there are still cyclists who travel on highy bike-unfriendly roads like the SH1 in Albania and famous Jadranska Magistrala, the coast road in Croatia and Montenegro; famous for it’s beauty and it’s danger.

The coast road in South Albania, still quiet in summer 2008.
